As President of BCCAAC, it is my honor to chair an Oversight
Committee, of Anne Arundel County Public Schools, Anne Arundel
County, Maryland. AACPS Oversight Committee is charged with the
responsibility of ensuring that equity prevails within the
procurement program of AACPS. Heretofore prior to the inception and
involvement of BCCAAC, minority contractors were minimized and
contracts awarded to minority were few and limited. In fact, during
the year of 2003, African American received slightly more than
$100,000.00 in total contracts. Howbeit, as a result of BCCAAC, by
way of the Oversight Committee, (AACPS), minority sub-contractors
have made great strides. Contracts towards minority businesses have
increased (ten) fold. Below is a sample of gains and of BCCAAC’S
contribution- advocacy and voice for minority businesses.
The results herein demonstrate that minorities
are making great gains due to the monitoring and the procurement
plan adopted by AACPS, School System. In March of 2011, a bid opened
totaling $ 15, 949,059.00; the overall goal for MBE, was 25.17%;
MBE’s were awarded a total of $ 4, 474, 178.20. Altogether African
American, were awarded a total of $ 2, 242, 849.00; women were
awarded a total of $1, 849, and 985.20……Hispanic, were awarded a
total of $359,824. 00. Awardees for the year of 2008, minority
contractors, constituted a total of (96) MBE’S; 2009, a total of
(129); and for the year of 2010, a total of (135) contracts were
awarded to MBE’s, from the procurement program of AACPS. * In an
effort to expand its reach, and in an effort to serve the minority
community, BCCAAC ask that those benefitting from its efforts become
members and lend their voice to the mission of ensuring and
improving economic opportunities for minorities here within Anne
Arundel County Maryland.
